Introduction

Using Corporate Modeler, The Flemish Government is now significantly closer to the creation of an inter-departmental, model-driven architecture

The Flemish Government uses Corporate Modeler to build an inter-departmental, cross-functional enterprise architecture that is understood by all. Corporate Modeler is used to capture and communicate how the different elements of the organization are linked together, and to support transition towards a model-driven architecture.

Challenge

Over the past two years, The Government of the Flemish Community in Belgium has witnessed a significant increase in its activities surrounding Enterprise Architecture. The biggest challenge, however, was getting buy-in from management and arriving at a shared vision with regards to EA concepts. A superior, more detailed architecture was needed but appeared to be too difficult to communicate and, therefore establish.

A more pragmatic approach was needed.

Solution

The Flemish Government used Corporate Modeler to focus on the needs of different stakeholders by creating different views of architecture for different audiences. The same message was delivered to system users and designers, but at the most appropriate level of detail for each; all without compromising the content. By having these different “views” of the same model, the tool is considered a powerful mechanism for communicating and delivering the real value of a coherent Enterprise Architecture.

Results

Using Corporate Modeler, The Flemish Government is now significantly closer to the creation of an inter-departmental, cross-functional and model-driven architecture, understood by all. Corporate Modeler helps users to understand how all the pieces fit together. The fact that the architecture team can store and centralize this information within a shared workspace using an easily-customizable tool is seen as a huge advantage.
